Fishing is one of the world’s most popular pastimes. Usually it’s nothing notable, just your run-of-the-mill catch. But every so often the net pulls up something worth talking about. That was the case for seasoned fisherman Alex Todd of Chebeague Island, Maine. He was having a regular day when he chanced upon a very rare white lobster.
Todd described the lobster as being “translucent with a hint of blue.” After noticing the lobster was a female and had been marked as egg-carrying, he decided to drop her back into the ocean.
“Even if it had been male, it’s an oddity that, why cook it for a $4 lobster?” he said.
If you’re wondering just how this lobster came to be this rare color, the Maine Coast Fishermen’s Association says it’s probably because of a genetic condition called Leucism. This condition features a partial loss of pigmentation, which would explain the bluish tint and why it’s not technically an albino despite its lack of color.
This lobster could have easily ended up paired with a side of garlic butter, but this unique creature will have the chance to carry out her life’s mission.
